A Lifeline for Seniors Through the Friendship Line

There are moments in life when the silence feels a little too heavy—when loneliness, grief, or isolation starts to take hold. For many older adults, those moments can happen more often than people realize. That’s why having someone to talk to—someone who will truly listen—can make all the difference.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re highlighting a remarkable resource that has been providing that connection for decades: the Friendship Line.
More Than a Helpline—A Human Connection
The Friendship Line is not just for emergencies. It’s what’s known as a “warm line,” meaning anyone can call, even if they’re simply looking for conversation or emotional support.
Since its founding in 1973 by Dr. Patrick Arbore, the line has served as a steady, reliable source of comfort for older adults across California. What makes it truly extraordinary? In more than 50 years, it has never gone unanswered.
Operated by Institute on Aging, the Friendship Line is staffed by trained professionals and compassionate volunteers who understand the unique emotional needs of seniors.
The Impact Behind Every Call
Each month, the team answers and makes over 11,000 calls—each one an opportunity to provide reassurance, kindness, and connection.
The Friendship Line is part of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief-Related Services and is accredited by the American Association of Suicidology, ensuring the highest standards of care and support.
But beyond credentials and numbers, the real impact is simple: no one has to feel alone.
Why This Matters to Us
At Heartfelt Care Agency, we believe care goes beyond physical assistance. Emotional well-being plays a critical role in overall health—especially for seniors who may be living alone or experiencing life transitions.
That’s why we’re proud to support the Friendship Line through a donation to the Institute on Aging. Programs like this align deeply with our mission: helping seniors feel seen, heard, and supported every single day.
